ALPHA KAPPA ALPHA NATIONAL HISTORY

ALPHA KAPPA ALPHA SORORITY was founded on January 15, 1908 at Howard University in Washington, DC. The founders and charter members of the Sorority are Ethel Hedgeman Lyle, Norma Boyd, Anna Easter Brown, Beulah Burke, Lillie Burke, Marjorie Hill, Margaret Flagg Holmes, Ethel Jones Mowbray, Alice P. Murray, Lavinia Norman, Sarah Merriweather Nutter, Joanna Berry Shields, Lucy Diggs Slowe, Carrie Snowden, Marie Woolfolk Taylor, and Harriet Josephine Terry. 

From its inception, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated has stressed excellence in scholarship and high moral ideals. With the changing needs in society, the sorority's goals were expanded to include a significant emphasis on leadership development and community service. Today, the influence and concerns of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated extend far beyond the college campus. The national and international programs of the sorority have resulted in the improvement of the quality of life for many people. 


LAMBDA OMEGA CHAPTER HISTORY

LAMBDA OMEGA CHAPTER of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated was chartered in Newport News, Virginia on January 13, 1934. Lambda Omega is a channel through which each member can improve educational, social, cultural, and economic conditions on the Virginia Peninsula. Through the years, Lambda Omega has maintained an annual membership of more than 100 women.

Our chapter continues to perpetuate the ideals and principles of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority and contributes thousands of dollars annually to community service projects for educational and cultural development. The purpose of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. is to nurture and encourage high scholastic and ethical standards, to study and help alleviate problems concerning girls and women in order to improve their social stature, and to be of service to all mankind.
