Standing Committees

AKA Connection/Political Action

AKA Connection/Political Action: Interprets AKA’s international understanding of world communities; supports and addresses issues regarding national and international needs that impact the quality of life. Promotes chapter involvement in the political process; informs the chapter and community of issues that impact their lives; participates in the yearly AKA Day at the state Capitol.

Budget/Finance

Budget/Finance: Makes the yearly budget with appropriate officers and committee chairpersons; reviews the budget periodically; makes recommendations for fund-raising; presents monthly reports.

Bylaws

Bylaws: Reviews old laws and submits new laws to keep in harmony with the latest rulings of the Boule; proposes needed changes and examines proposed amendments.

Community Services/Health

Community Services/Health: Plans and implements effective service and health programs/projects; utilizes resources within the community; supervises continuation of services to Riverside Convalescent Center and others. 

Courtesy and Sorority Relations


Courtesy and Sorority Relations: Extends courtesies, sends flowers, cards and gifts; serves as a telephone committee for important announcements; extends welcomes to new and visiting sorors.

Graduate Advisory Council

Graduate Advisory Council: Serves as liaison between the graduate chapter and undergraduate chapter, the Regional Director and National Office; promotes a positive image of the sorority on the campus of Christopher Newport University (CNU) and assists the graduate advisors of Nu Epsilon (CNU’s chapter).

Membership

Membership: Implements membership intake, works closely with Courtesy and Sorority Relations, issues name tags, and maintains count of members present at chapter meetings; responsible for reactivation activities and promotes membership effectiveness.

Nominating

Nominating: Prepares the slate of officers to be submitted to the chapter; prepares names of delegates to be submitted to the chapter for Cluster, Regional and Boule.

Program Committee


Program Committee: Interprets the work of the National Program Committee by planning a calendar of all activities and programs that focus on the initiatives of the National program theme.

Publicity/Awards/Exhibits

Publicity/Awards/Exhibits: Prepares articles with accompanying pictures on a regular basis to the "Ivy Leaf" and local media. Prepares awards and exhibit entries for regional Conferences, encourages mini-exhibits and award programs at meetings, coordinates with committees regarding their objectives related to publicity.

Scholarship and Career Guidance

Scholarship and Career Guidance: Interprets and relates information regarding the National Scholarship Programs; screens and selects recipients of chapter scholarships. Plans a major career guidance workshop for teenagers every other year.

Social Activities

Social Activities: Plans the social activities of the chapter; works closely with the Program Committee to plan entertainment.

Standards

Standards: Establishes criteria for the evaluation of Lambda Omega as needed; interprets the rules and regulations that govern the sorority.

Special Committees

Archives/History

The Archivist: (1) Collects, catalogs, preserves, and updates the important documents and artifacts relating to the founding and continuing development of the chapter; (2) Prepares a narrative account of the chapter's activities including pictures and news articles; (3) Files reports withthe regional and corporate offices as required; and (4) Works cooperatively with the Program Chairman, Ivy Leaf Reporter and Custodian.

Black Heritage

Black Heritage: Plans and presents a program to the chapter and to the community recognizing the many facets of African-American history and the contribution of African-Americans to our heritage.

Cultural Arts

Cultural Arts: Increases cultural offerings in the community and supports promising artists through exposure, financial assistance, and other opportunities to promote their talents.

Custodian

Custodian: Assumes responsibility for the care, storage, and inventory of proterty of the chapter, includings such items as the emplem, historical records, scrapbooks, etc.; (2) Creates a system for checking out and returning items to the designated location; and (3) Works in conjunction with the archivist in maintaining archival information.

Devotions


Devotions: Conducts meditations and invocations for the chapter.

Economic Development

Economic Development: Proposes and executes projects which will empower the chapter and community toward receiving economic independence.

Founders' Day

Founders’ Day: Plans the Founders’ Day celebration for the chapter; may collaborate with other chapters.

Fund-Raising

Fund Raising: Plans and implements fund-raising activities for the chapter.

Grant Writing/Sponsorship

Grantwriting/Sponsorship: Develops proposals and researches resources and foundations for technical assistance to assess funds for program activities.

High School Senior Activity


High School Senior Activity: Plans and implements the annual high school day activity for area high school senior girls.

Ivy AKAdemy

Ivy AKAdemy: Plans and organizes programs that address community education in the five International Program strands.

Ivy Vines

Ivy Vines: Provides support to selected teenage girls in various educational, social and cultural activities; plans and implements community projects.

Leadership

Leadership: Plans and implements activities that promote leadership development within the chapter.

Music

Music: Provides music for chapter programs and activities; develops a repertoire of music for special occasions; makes sorors aware of ceremonial hymns as appropriate.

On Track

On Track: Organizing, Nurturing, Team-Building, Respecting, Achieving, Character-Building, and Knowledge. Targets at-risk youth in third through seventh grade.

Pan-Hellenic Council Representative

Pan-Hellenic Council Representative: Serves as liaison between Lambda Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha and the Newport News Pan-Hellenic Council. The council contains representatives of the international Black Greek fraternities and sororities.

Partnership in Math & Science

Partnership in Math and Science: Assists area students in math and science projects; provides tutorial support; promotes an awareness of math and science careers through a career fair; plans and implements an effective support base for area students.

Technology

Technology: Promotes the use of technology within chapter programs and activities; provides technical assistance when needed. Maintains the Lambda Omega chapter website and pictorial membership directory.
